And you likely know by now that while a flat organization is an appealing concept, some companies have backed away from a flat structure or reported that they can be tricky to get right.

I found this to be a helpful article to consider. I think there is a lot of value in decentralization and “flatter” structures but sometimes they can cause more harm than good. Of late, one of my favorite quotes has been, paraphrased, “You need enough structure to get things done but perhaps no more than that” (generally attributed to Albert Einstein). If a decentralized and flat structure is going to work it needs to take this notion seriously or it will run head first into the pitfalls outlined in the linked article.
